Sena Bioresearch and Innovation Academy
Mission Statement
At the Sena Bioresearch and Innovation Academy (SBIA), our mission is to bridge the gap between life science education, research, and real-world innovation in Africa. SBIA is a student-run youth club that is committed to empowering the next generation of biological scientists through hands-on training, collaborative research, industry partnerships, and community-centered initiatives. By nurturing curiosity, building capacity, and driving scientific discovery, we aim to transform challenges into opportunities and make bioscience and biotechnology a powerful tool for sustainable development across the continent.

Why SBIA?
The Sena Bioresearch and Innovation Academy (SBIA) was founded to bridge a critical gap in bioscience education, research, and innovation across Ghana and Africa. For too long, many promising students and early-career scientists have lacked access to practical training, mentorship, and opportunities to contribute meaningfully to real-world scientific problems. SBIA is changing that narrative.
We believe Africa’s future depends on how well we invest in its scientists today.
SBIA exists to nurture a new generation of bold, curious, and skilled STEM leaders—through hands-on research experiences, strategic partnerships, and community-driven innovation. By empowering students with tools, networks, and support, we’re not just filling educational gaps—we’re building a thriving ecosystem of African scientists equipped to lead global conversations.
Our Impact on STEM Education
- Accessible Research Training: SBIA provides workshops, lab internships, and innovation challenges that equip students with real-world skills in biotechnology, molecular biology, and more.
- Mentorship & Career Development: We connect students with local and international scientists, mentors, and industry experts to guide their academic and career journeys.
- Innovation Culture: Through programs like the Bioresearch Challenge and our project-based learning approach, SBIA encourages students to think beyond textbooks—to solve problems with creativity, data, and purpose.
- Chapter System for Growth: With chapters across universities, we are creating a national network of student-led STEM communities focused on excellence, collaboration, and leadership.
- Equity and Inclusion: SBIA is committed to making STEM education more inclusive—ensuring that women, underrepresented groups, and students from underserved regions have the support and resources to thrive

SBIA Signature Programs
Biogenesis is SBIA’s foundational lab training workshop designed to equip students with essential bioscience skills—from pipetting and microscopy to bioinfomatics and molecular protocols. It bridges the gap between theory and hands-on lab competence, especially for students who have had limited access to practical training. As a recurring program, Biogenesis continues to build confidence and competence in the next generation of researchers, empowering them to thrive in academic and industry labs alike.
The inaugural Biogenesis workshop was held on March 22, 2025 at the University for Development Studies campus. The workshop trained over 100 students in microbiology and bacteria subculture.

Neurolink is SBIA’s dynamic networking and personal development workshop that connects students with experienced scientists, innovators, and professionals. Focused on LinkedIn profile building, career navigation, and financial literacy, Neurolink helps students build strong professional identities and networks. As a continuous series, it ensures members are not only skilled in science—but also prepared for the global STEM workforce.
The inaugural neurolink was held on April 4, 2025 at the University for Development Studies (UDS) campus in Tamale. It brought together students and faculty to network and get to know each other.

Guide X is SBIA’s premier mentor-mentee program, crafted to inspire, guide, and empower the next generation of African scientists. Through this year-long initiative, members of the Academy are paired with accomplished professionals and experts in their fields of interest—creating powerful relationships that foster growth, confidence, and clarity.
Mentors offer personalized guidance on research, career development, and real-world impact, helping students move beyond the classroom and into meaningful scientific and professional spaces. Guide X is where ambition meets experience—and where potential is shaped into purpose.

SBIA National Conference is an annual gathering where members from all SBIA chapters meet to connect, learn, and grow. The conference offers deep dives into SBIA’s structure—including its Houses—while providing a platform to interact with renowned scientists, innovators, and industry leaders. It’s a unique opportunity for collaboration, mentorship, and vision-building.
